Lambchop Among the Golden Leaves

By October, the Valley begins speaking in gold.

The crowds have faded, harvest is winding down, and the trails at Minto-Brown Island Park settle into an easier rhythm. Cottonwoods shimmer above the paths while leaves gather underfoot, turning an ordinary walk into something worth slowing down for.

Lambchop seemed perfectly at home here. Every few steps there was another scent to investigate, another rustling leaf to inspect, and every so often she would pause, rise onto her back legs, and quietly ask if another treat might be available.

One of the quiet joys of Minto-Brown is that every trail feels a little different. Around one bend, sunlight pours through the cottonwoods. Around the next, moss blankets fallen logs and reminds you just how damp and alive the Willamette Valley can be. Lambchop approached each new corner with cheerful curiosity, pausing just long enough to look around before setting off to discover whatever waited farther down the trail.

Color of the Season
Autumn Gold

Bloom
By October, the Valley's spring blossoms have given way to broad canopies of cottonwood, maple, ash, and oak. Their leaves catch the afternoon sun, turning the trails into tunnels of warm gold and amber.

Peak Moment
Autumn color typically reaches its peak from late October into early November. Cool nights and sunny days create the brilliant display that makes this one of the park's most beautiful seasons.

Valley Fact
Minto-Brown Island Park spans more than 1,200 acres along the Willamette River. Once shaped by farming and seasonal flooding, it is now one of Oregon's largest urban parks, protecting wetlands, woodlands, open meadows, and miles of trails that connect people with the Valley's natural landscape.

Listen For
Canada geese overhead, the chatter of chickadees and nuthatches, woodpeckers working the trees, and the rustle of dry leaves tumbling across the path.

Look For
Golden reflections on the water, bright green moss covering fallen logs, mushrooms emerging after the first autumn rains, and salmonberries preparing for another spring.

Lambchop wasn't the dog they expected to bring home. During an ice storm, her family was fostering for 4 All Muttkind and preparing to welcome what they thought would be a cattle dog. Instead, they met a little white fluffball named Lambchop. Plans changed almost immediately. Sometimes the right dog has a way of finding the right family, and what began as a temporary foster became a forever home. Watching Lambchop wander through the golden leaves at Minto-Brown, it's hard to imagine her story ending any other way.

The trees may have stolen the show that morning, but Lambchop had other priorities. She explored the trail with quiet determination, stopping wherever something interesting caught her attention. It was an unhurried walk through one of the Valley's most colorful seasons, shared with a dog who seemed perfectly content to enjoy it at her own pace.

Every Story Begins Somewhere

Every dog featured in the Colors of the Valley 2027 Calendar has a story.

Many of those stories found a new beginning through 4 All Muttkind Rescue. Because someone opened their home. Someone opened their heart. Someone believed every dog deserved the chance to belong.

Today, those second chances are exploring the orchards, forests, rivers, gardens, and fields of the Willamette Valley, discovering its colors one season at a time.

That's the story we're celebrating.

Next in the Valley → Meet the next 4 All Muttkind alumni as Colors of the Valley continues through another season, another place, and another unforgettable dog.
