Mocha Among the Tulips

Spring arrives boldly in the Willamette Valley.

Rows of crimson, violet, coral, and pink stretch across the dark soil, transforming the working fields into bands of color. Beneath an overcast sky, even the quietest presence stands out.

Mocha is naturally cautious. She takes her time with unfamiliar people and new surroundings, watching carefully before deciding everything is all right.

Among the tulips, she did exactly that.

She studied the flowers, listened to the activity around her, and slowly settled into the morning. Then, little by little, the more familiar Mocha began to appear—the curious young dog with the sideways ears, an excellent appreciation for treats, and a goofball hiding just beneath the surface.

A Goofball in Bloom

Mocha joined her family when she was three months old, one of six siblings beginning lives of their own.

She can be shy and timid, especially when the world feels unfamiliar. Mocha prefers to watch for a while, taking her time before deciding it is safe to step forward.

Once she knows you, a very different dog appears.

That Mocha is playful, treat-motivated, and always ready for a good wrestling match with her pals. She is even learning to catch—although enthusiasm and accuracy do not always arrive at precisely the same moment.

Like the tulips around her, Mocha opens in her own time.

Spring, Planted in Rows

Tulip season may last only a few weeks, but the work begins months before the first green shoots appear.

Bulbs are planted in autumn, tucked into the Valley’s dark soil before the winter rains arrive. Through the coldest months, they remain beneath the surface, gathering everything they need for spring.

Then the fields change quickly.

Straight rows of green become ribbons of red, yellow, pink, and violet—each bloom part of a carefully planted crop and a brief, spectacular season in the Willamette Valley.

For Mocha, the tulips offered something else: a quiet place to take her time, find her footing, and bloom exactly as she is.

Every Story Begins Somewhere

Every dog featured in the Colors of the Valley 2027 Calendar has a story.

Many of those stories found a new beginning through 4 All Muttkind Rescue. Because someone offered safety. Someone allowed trust to grow slowly. Someone understood that every dog unfolds in their own time.

Mocha may approach the world cautiously, but patience reveals the playful young dog beneath—the wrestler, the treat enthusiast, and the determined student still perfecting the art of catching.

Among rows of tulips planted months before they bloom, she offered a quiet reminder: some of the loveliest things are worth waiting for.

Every dog has a story. Every season leaves its own color across the Valley.
